اصطلاح گاز سنتز به مخلوطهاي گازي اطلاق ميشود كه محتوي منوكسيدكربن و هيدروژن به نسبتهاي مختلف باشند. هيدروژن و منوكسيدكربن دو مادة مهم در صنايع شيميايي محسوب شده و داراي مصارف و كاربردهاي فراواني ميباشند. منوكسيدكربن در توليد رنگها، پلاستيكها، فومها، حشرهكشها، علفكشها، اسيدها و ... به كار ميرود. از جمله مصارف هيدروژن نيز ميتوان به توليد آمونياك، هيدروژناسيون و هيدروكراكينگ اشاره نمود.

For many years, petroleum has been regarded as the cheapest source of liquid fuels by many countries, especially the United States and Canada. However, with the recent energy crises and concern over future supplies of gaseous and liquid fuels in many parts of the world, particularly Western Europe and North America, we have seen a gradual acceptance by the petroleum industry and the general public of the inevitability that petroleum and natural gas will, at some time within the foreseeable future, be in very short supply. As a result, petroleum technology is expanded to such an extent that wells that were previously regarded as nonproductive because of their inability to produce oil without considerable external stimulation are now reexamined with the object of, literally, recovering every last possible drop of petroleum.
